The next four weeks sped by quickly. Vanessa diligently stayed hydrated with both of the vital fluids.

“Are you ready?” We were due to be at Grayson’s office in twenty minutes, and it was a fifteen-minute drive from the mansion. V slipped her feet into a pair of pink canvas Vans. She was into wearing what she called comfy shoes now that she was pregnant. But they were still mostly pink. Pink was V’s favorite color. She even had pink tips in her hair. I secretly hoped for a little girl because I knew V would have so much fun dolling her up in pink clothes. She’d probably want matching outfits. I could already see it in my head.

She glanced up at me. “Getting there.”

“I see that. I mean, mentally.”

“Oh. Sure. Why not?”

I took her hand and helped her to stand then wrapped my arms around her middle, feeling the bump of her tummy against me when I pulled her in close. “Have you changed your mind about wanting to know the sex?”

“I’m leaning towards not knowing. Are you okay with that?”

“I’m fine either way, love.” This decision was hers as far as I was concerned. Despite my secret declaration a minute ago, I honestly didn’t care one way or the other. Just the fact that I fathered our future baby was enough of a miracle for me to be content. And that it was with V, the woman I loved was all the more wonderful. Even though she wouldn’t marry me.

I turned to face her. “Yeah, sure.”

“Stronger than your bonds with Ari and Chelle.”

“Yes. I’ve felt that.”

“Don’t be mad.”

“Why would I be mad?” I narrowed my eyes.

“Our bond is different, stronger, from the ones you have with Ari and Chelle because I made it stronger. You feel some things I feel, and I feel some things you feel. I just thought I should tell you since I hadn’t before.”

I sighed in relief and took her hands. “I know. Did you think I didn’t?”

“Well, yeah. Kinda.”

“I made you into a vampire. Do you think I wouldn’t know when you were bewitching me? I knew our bond was more powerful and the only way that could have happened was because you did it. But you also need to know that because I am your maker, I can turn it off whenever I want.”

“Is that why you never said anything?”

I shrugged. “Maybe. Plus, it wasn’t important.”

She smiled. “I do love you.”

“I know that.”

Her mouth gaped open and she clipped me in the shoulder. “You jerk.”

“Ow.” I rubbed the spot where she’d hit me, feigning agony as if her little punch hurt. “I’m your jerk.”

“Yes, you are. But your ego needs to take a vacation.”

I chuckled. “Let’s go, love.” I grabbed her hand and we headed to the car.

Lately, my ego wasn’t exactly basking in a glorious pool of blue tranquility. It felt
